“New Heart – New Spirit”

Read these Scriptures for impact on your discussion and study today…

Romans 5:8, Colossians 1:21, John 8:34, 2 Timothy 2:26, John 3:20, Ephesians 4:18-19, Romans 6:19, Romans 1:28-32, 2 Corinthians 4:4, 1 Peter 2:11, Genesis 8:21, Romans 3:10-11, Ephesians 2:1-3, Ezekiel 37:1-14, 23-28, Ezekiel 36:25-29, 36, and Ephesians 1:3-8

Discussion Questions:

1.  When was the last time you went to a cemetery?  Why were you there?

2.  Where have you gone where you have contemplated your own past: A childhood home? Your Alma mater? The site of a big decision you once made?

3.  Imagine a valley full of dry bones.  Why might their dryness be significant? (Ezekiel 37:2, 4)

4.  Hebrews use the word “ruach” for “wind,” “breath” and “spirit.” How are these three related (Ezekiel 37:5, 9, 14)?

5.  What are the two steps in raising these dead bones in Ezekiel 37:7-10?  Why not do it all at once?

6.  How are the exiles feeling (Ezekiel 37:11)?  What is God telling them about the future of: Israel? The individual? Humanity?

7.  What impact has sin and the sin nature had upon humanity according to Colossians 1:21, John 8:34, 2 Timothy 2:26, John 3:20, Ephesians 4:18-19, Romans 6:19, Romans 1:28-32, 2 Corinthians 4:4, 1 Peter 2:11, Genesis 8:21, Romans 3:10-11, Ephesians 2:1-3?

8.  If you could describe your own spiritual life in terms of the story in Ezekiel 37, where would you be right now: In the “valley,” wondering if the “old bones” of your life can ever live again?  There’s some rattling and things are starting to come together, but no real life yet?  Alive and strong, standing with your “buds” in a mighty army?

9.  According to Romans 5:8 and Ephesians 1:3-8, between you and God, who initiated the peace treaty?

10.  What has God done recently to truly bring life to your spirit?

11.  How can group members help raise each others’ spirits?

Prayer:  Dear Jesus, help me to know You better.  Fill me with Your Spirit, that I might follow You and help others to follow You as well.  Embolden me to share this Good News about You with others.

6.  When sharing (witnessing) about being a follower of Jesus, is it best to share how good it will be or how difficult it might be, to be a follower of Jesus?  Should you only share the benefits of becoming a follower or should you give them a “count the cost – it probably will be very difficult” picture of following Jesus?

14.  What is your greatest desire?

15.  How can you KNOW GOD better?  How can you help others KNOW GOD better?

16.  What role does knowing God’s Word, prayer, corporate worship, gathering with other believers, being Spirit-led (filled with the Holy Spirit’s presence), repentance, forgiveness, obedience, serving others (in the church and those outside of the church) play in your growing in your faith and KNOWING GOD better (developing your relationship with Him – following Him)?

Prayer:  Dear Jesus, help me to know You better.  Fill me with Your Spirit, that I might follow You and help others to follow You as well.  Embolden me to share this Good News about You with others.
